Joseph was God’s gift to Abraham’s descendants at a crucial time in their history. God had promised to give them a land where they could grow into the nation through whom he would send a Savior. Joseph’s family would temporarily settle in Egypt. There they would grow into a large nation, ready to take permanent possession of the Promised Land.
But Joseph’s family was in spiritual chaos. Father Jacob favored Joseph, and his other ten sons hated Joseph for it. Murder was in their hearts. They sold Joseph into slavery and told their father that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
How could such a family remain intact? How could God use them to bless the world? The answer is found in the story of Joseph. The “kingdom of God” refers to God’s work of blessing all people with a Savior. By God’s grace, Joseph gave his entire life to keep this work on track.
