This volume treats the eastern counterpart to the Roman Catholic Church of the West. Eastern Orthodoxy represents the second-largest Christian group after Roman Catholicism. It’s primarily found in what we today call eastern European countries like Greece, Romania, or Russia. They often carry the name of their country of origin, for example, the Russian Orthodox Church or the Greek Orthodox Church. In many ways, these churches are the same. But in some ways they are different.

The author visited Eastern Orthodox churches in Russia and went to numerous services of various Eastern Orthodox churches in Southeastern Wisconsin.

This book will help you understand the history of Eastern Orthodoxy, including the series of events that led to its split from the western half of Christianity. It will also help you understand the central teaching of Eastern Orthodoxy. After the death of the apostles, Christianity changed its focus from the forgiveness of sins we have in Christ to an emphasis on becoming more like God. Eastern Orthodox people call this “theosis.”

This is one in a series of books produced by Northwestern Publishing House for its A Lutheran Looks At . . . series. The authors of this series subscribe to the Lutheran Confessions and conduct their evaluation on that basis.
