God's Word Alone

Comforting Job

$18.95

The book of Job is the first of Scripture’s five books of wisdom. It lays the foundation of wisdom, namely, that we should honor God and accept what he does in our lives and in the world. In times of suffering, we are to say with Job: “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. May the name of the LORD be blessed” (Job 1:21)

Job was blameless and upright, a man whom God afflicted with terrible suffering and loss. No one knew why.

The five people in the book of Job were searching for an answer. Three thought that God was punishing Job because he was a sinner. Another thought that God was discipling him. Job, however, knew he was blameless, and he had no answer.

Job’s speeches are a combination of complaints against God and statements of trust in God’s goodness. In the end, God answered Job by rebuking him for complaining. God impressed on Job that only God knows the right thing to do. But in spite of Job’s complaints, he vindicated Job’s trust in the Savior, and he condemned the three friends for their treatment of Job.

Using paraphrase, commentary, and special explanations, this book uncovers the lessons taught in the book of Job.
